Vinous 2023 Neal Martin

2022 Chablis 89 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis Village, raised in stainless steel vat, has a simple but effective nose with Granny Smith and peach skin scents emerging from the glass. The palate is fresh, vibrant, and quite pithy in texture with an engaging, white peach and Anjou pear-infused finish. Good substance and decent complexity. This is exactly what you want from a Chablis Village.

2022 Chablis « La Vigne de 1975 » 88 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis « La Vigne de 1975 » is matured in stainless steel. It has a crisp, focused bouquet with fine delineation, quite « punchy » in style. The palate is well-balanced with good depth, though it needs a little more acidity that was perhaps denuded by the warm summer. Good weight and lenght, though not quite overcoming that year’s heat.

2022 Chablis Premier Cru Fourchaume 88 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis 1er Cru has a nicely detailed bouquet with mineral-tinged citrus fruit, becoming more floral as it opens in the glass. The palate is balanced with a waxy opening; there’s quite a lot of extract here, with a dash of pepperiness enhancing the finish. Certainly, this works better than the Vaillons, representing one of the producer’s stronger efforts in this vintage.

2022 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses 88 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis Les Preuses Grand Cru, raised entirely in stainless steel, has a bright and zesty bouquet with lemon thyme, wet stne and light candle wax aromas. The palate is a bit gassy on the entry and rather honeyed in texture, detracting from tension and racing towards the finish. Maybe a bit of cooked fruit here? It’s not unattractive, but it needed to be picked earlier.

2022 Petit Chablis 85 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Petit Chablis has nuanced, slightly flinty bouquet. It just needs a little more intensity, which might come with a few months in the bottle. The palate has good concentration, perhaps a later-picked Petit Chablis, although that comes at the expense of some delineation on the finish.

2022 Chablis Premier Cru Vosgros 85 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru feels a bit dilute on the nose. The palate is better with citrus peel and apple peelings on the entry, but it feels rather hollow towards the finish. The Chablis Village works better this year. This feels somewhat denuded of tension and vitality.

2022 Chablis Premier Cru Vaucoupin 85 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis Vaucoupin 1er Cru, matured entirely in stainless steel, lacks a bit of vigor on the nose and seems slighty flat-footed compared to its peers. The palate is balanced but simple, seeming to drift away on the monotone finish.

2022 Chablis Premier Cru Vaillons 84 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru has a bit of SO2 on the nose, imparting a slight unwanted egginess. The palate is a little disjointed with light citrus fruit on the entry, but it comes across rather muddled on the finish.

2022 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 87 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros matured in stainless steel until mid-April. It has a light nose with grass clipping, light malic aromas, and a touch of gravel. The palate is taut fresh is missing some complexity on the mid-palate and needs more tension towards the finish. Fine, but falling short of Grand Cru standard.

2022 Irancy Les Mazelots 81 pts at Vinous
The 2022 Irancy Les Mazelots doesn’t feel as clean on the nose as I would have liked. Sweet entry on the palate, this feels as if it has some cooked fruit in the mix.
