What is the difference between Petit Chablis, Chablis, Chablis Premier Cru and Chablis Grand Cru?

These are the four appellations of the Chablis vineyard, all made from chardonnay; what sets them apart is their terroir. Petit Chablis (about 1,300 ha) comes mainly from the plateaus with Portlandian soils: a lively, fresh wine to enjoy young. Chablis (about 3,700 ha), the heart of the vineyard, grows mostly on Kimmeridgian marl rich in marine fossils: more structure and minerality. Chablis Premier Cru (about 800 ha) comes from 40 climats on well-exposed slopes: more depth and good ageing potential. Chablis Grand Cru (around a hundred hectares, about 1.5% of production) has only seven climats, all on a single slope on the right bank of the Serein: Blanchot, Bougros, Les Clos, Grenouilles, Les Preuses, Valmur and Vaudésir. These wines age beautifully, 10 to 15 years and sometimes more. At the estate you will find all four levels, from Petit Chablis to Grand Cru Bougros: discover them on our Our wines page.
